Q.
Who
can I contact in my area about this: My high school has carpet down
in the hallways > that has been down for 7 years. It has had water
exposure and has never been replaced or inspected for suspected mold.
Also, there are numerous ceiling leaks. I as well as many other
fellow teachers are suffering from headaches, sinus problems, etc.
Give me some guidance in the steps to take for some ACTION to take
place asap. I have reported the incidents to the building
administration and nothing happens. We also believe that the air
conditioning system and ducts are mold-contaminated.
A. You
and fellow teachers join together to pay for a thorough mold
inspection and mold testing. If results show big mold infestation
problems, have an attorney send a letter to school administration and
school board demanding mold remediation. If they are still
unresponsive, deliver test results to local television stations,
radio states, and newspaper editors.

Q. I
am a teacher in a high school. For the past two weeks my classroom
floor has had black spots on it. It is much worse today. The
floors were waxed before school started but for the past two weeks
I've noticed the spots and they are getting everywhere now.
This morning when I came in I told my principal and as I came back to
class I could see grayish black spots that had not been stepped on
that were raised and fuzzy. I have asthma and have had a time for the
past 4-5 weeks breathing. Could the floor possible be mold? I have a
ceiling that leaks and it is gross. Please help me.

Your
recent health problems and the visual sighting of black areas in the
floor should lead either the school system or you [if schools won't
do it] to test both the air inside your classroom, the floor for mold
infestation. Mold can cause asthma and can certainly make asthma
worse for someone such as yourself who is already suffering from
asthma. This is a serious problem requiring the immediate attention
