CALIFORNIA MANDATES QUICK
RESPONSE TO LEAKS, WATER DAMAGE

LOS ANGELES -- Facility managers and business owners are
under new pressures in California to quickly respond to water leaks, flooding or damage.
The
California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board last week implemented a new
state standard requiring facility managers and business owners to remediate "exterior
water intrusion, leaks from interior water sources or other uncontrolled accumulation of
water."
The
standard, according to supporting materials, removes any perceived ambiguity that the
presence of mold does not require cleaning and states that mold is an unsanitary
condition in the workplace that the employer must clean.
Failure to remediate the water damage or mold growth could lead to a fine, an official
with California's Occupational Safety and Health Administration stated.
An
official with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health alerted CM
e-News Daily/CMM Online to the new California regulation.
The
federal official, Jean Cox-Ganser, who is a federal indoor air quality (IAQ) researcher
said the regulation was a "step in the right direction" in terms of improving air quality
in the nation's buildings.
